Case Background
Ms. Conrad, at 30 years old, underwent surgery on September 5, 2019, to remove her ovaries due to endometriosis—a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain.
The procedure was performed by Dr. W. Scott Supplee at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, with Dr. Francis Grumbine assisting. Tragically, during the surgery, Ms. Conrad’s left ureter was mistakenly transected.
This injury went undetected, leading to significant post-operative complications.
Following the surgery, Ms. Conrad experienced persistent pain, nausea, and vomiting. Despite these symptoms, no follow-up testing or imaging was conducted to identify the underlying issue.
It was only after seeking a second opinion in July 2020 that the ureter injury was discovered. By then, her left kidney had suffered irreversible damage, necessitating its removal.

Legal Proceedings
The lawsuit alleged that the surgeons not only caused the injury but also failed to perform procedures that would have identified it promptly. Additionally, the improper prescription of estrogen therapy post-surgery exacerbated Ms. Conrad’s condition.
The jury awarded over $500,000 for past and future medical expenses and $4 million in noneconomic damages.
